If you have a 2x/4x slot, just buy a 2x/4x card and you're fine. Already have an account? It says its upgradeble to 8x but I've had it over two years and have been unable to do so.
The original AGP transferred data at 266MB/s, and the 2x, 4x, and 8x versions simply work at 2, 4, or 8 times that data rate.
